See Terracotta Warriors & Other Ancient Wonders

Standard DreamTrip
Get immersed in the rich heritage of the ancient Chinese city of Xian with visits to Guanzhong Folk Art Museum, fortified city wall, famed terracotta warriors & an opera house for a singing lesson & shadow puppet-making experience. Book by October 23.

About Your Trip

You’ll get a real glimpse into the historical impact of northwest China’s widely recognized arts and culture as you tour the ancient sites and scenery of Xian — and beyond! Your first tour begins at Guanzhong Folk Art Museum, a former Buddhist shrine, for a look at amazing treasures such as the massive collection of stone-carved hitching posts and centuries-old courtyards. At the museum, participate in a traditional craft-making experience like paper cutting and knot tying. After lunch, you’ll transfer to the ancient city wall where you can discover it on foot or by bicycle. This structure is more than 630 years old and the only complete wall fortification left intact in China. Once the sun sets, continue to Datang for nighttime views.

The following day, you’ll visit the museum holding one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century — the terracotta warriors discovered in a farmer’s field in 1974. These life-sized clay statues were excavated from the nearby UNESCO-protected tomb of China’s first emperor and were sculpted more than 2,000 years ago by the emperor to accompany him in his afterlife. You’ll visit 3 excavation pits filled with thousands of warriors, horses and chariots, where no 2 are alike. See the exhibition hall showcasing 2 of the best-preserved horse-and-chariot sculptures from the emperor’s tomb. After lunch, you’ll head to Qin Opera for a one-of-a-kind opportunity where you can dress in traditional costumes, learn to sing an opera song and make a shadow puppet.

Back at your hotel, enjoy free time to explore the area at your leisure. Check out the Muslim Quarter, home to the city’s large Muslim community and several historical buildings, such as Great Mosque of Xi'an. Delve into the Islamic culture by strolling around, perhaps sampling traditional food like yangrou paomo or roujiamo. For the ultimate in relaxation, you could head to Huaqing Hot Springs, which encompass multiple pools and geothermally heated springs at the base of Mt. Li. Or, why not consider a visit Tang Paradise? It’s an immense, record-setting theme park boasting multiple “culture areas” dedicated to the Tang dynasty’s colorful history and heritage.

What we love:
• The well-preserved ancient city wall in the center of Xian — the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China — is approximately 9 miles (14 kilometers) long.
• Since its discovery in 1974, the tomb of China’s first emperor has become a famous, beloved UNESCO World Heritage site. Some of the ancient life-size statues are on view in traveling exhibitions throughout the world.

Destination

Xian boasts a long and rich history as one of the oldest cities in China. Located in northwest China, in the center of the Guanzhong Plain, it is one of the country’s Four Great Ancient Capitals and the head of the legendary Silk Road. It was known as Sian to ancient Western explorers and traders who Romanized the city’s spelling. Xian has plenty of the characteristics of modern-day China, but its magic comes from a wealth of historic and cultural landmarks. Top destinations include the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower — centrally located, can’t-miss attractions that symbolize Xian — and the old fortifications known as the Xian City Wall. The area is also home to the famed mausoleum of China’s 1st emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Due to the plethora of ancient sites, the city is the most popular tourism destination in China, upon which the economy relies heavily.
